The exact symptom
Even while Codex was idle and not running a command or generating content, its window became white and unresponsive about every 10 seconds. Each pause usually lasted 1–2 seconds and then cleared on its own.
Before moving the app, the mouse pointer visibly stalled at the same time. It felt less like one frozen window and more like the entire desktop was being interrupted.
Test environment
The test system runs Windows 10 with ample memory and a good SSD. Normal workloads were light, so this did not look like an obvious low-memory or mechanical-drive bottleneck.

This is a personal result from one machine, not proof that every Codex freeze is caused by the C drive. The before-and-after difference was clear enough to share as a troubleshooting option for people with the same symptom.
Simple relocation method
- Locate Codex.Keep Codex open, right-click the Windows taskbar, open Task Manager, expand the Codex process, right-click a Codex entry, and select Open file location.
- Find the full version folder.Move up through the parent directories until you see the complete app folder, with a name similar to:
OpenAI.Codex_version_x64__package-id - Close Codex, then copy it.Note the location, fully close Codex, and copy the entire versioned folder to another SSD. Use a short path containing simple English characters when possible:
E:\app\OpenAI.Codex_version_x64__package-id - Run the moved copy.Open the copied
appfolder and runCodex.exe. Use Task Manager again to verify that the running executable now comes from the new SSD.
Permissions and update notes
A Codex update may create a new versioned directory and start using the original installation location again. If mouse stuttering returns, use Task Manager to verify the current path of the running Codex.exe.
Some Codex command components and user data may remain under C:\Users\your-name\.codex. This method moves the main application, not every piece of Codex data.
Conclusion
If Codex Desktop freezes and takes the mouse and entire desktop with it, moving the complete main app folder to another SSD may keep the freeze contained to Codex.
